Fostering, Adoption and Finding the Right Path for Your Family

This week, as we recognise Children of Foster Carers’ Week, we're celebrating the families who open their homes and hearts to children who need love, care and stability.

There is a huge need for more foster carers to support children, whether that’s for a short period while decisions are being made by the courts about their future, or for longer-term care when they cannot return home. We also understand that fostering is not the right path for everyone. For some people, the uncertainty of caring for a child without the permanence of adoption can feel challenging.

For many children, adoption provides the lifelong security and sense of belonging they need. It offers permanence both legally and emotionally, allowing children to become a permanent part of a family. Some people may also be interested in fostering for adoption, where they care for a child who may ultimately need an adoptive family if they are unable to return to their birth family.

What's the Difference Between Fostering, Adoption and Fostering for Adoption?

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between fostering, adoption and fostering for adoption? All three offer children the opportunity to experience love, stability and support, but they each provide a different type of care and commitment.

Fostering
Foster carers provide a safe and nurturing home for children who are unable to live with their birth family. This may be for a short period while assessments and decisions are made about a child's future, or for longer-term care. Foster carers play a crucial role in helping children feel secure during often difficult and uncertain times.

Adoption
Adoption gives a child a permanent family for life. Adoptive parents take on full parental responsibility, and the child becomes a legal and emotional member of their family. For many children who cannot return home, adoption offers the stability, security and sense of belonging they need to thrive.

Fostering for Adoption
Fostering for adoption, sometimes referred to as Early Permanence, combines elements of both adoption and fostering. Families who are approved adopters care for a child from an early stage while court decisions are still being made, with the possibility of becoming their adoptive family if the child is unable to return to their birth family. This approach can help minimise moves for young children and provide them with continuity of care.

There is a significant need for more people to come forward to foster, adopt and do Foster for Adoption. While each path is different, they all rely on compassionate individuals and families who are willing to make a lasting difference in a child's life.
