Could You Adopt Siblings? - Blog
Our children are at the heart of what we do and when it comes to our sibling groups, we try very hard to keep them together. Brothers and sisters have such a unique, and powerful bond. They have often been through extremely difficult circumstances and in most situations have been the only constant within each other’s lives. Living through such difficult times together, means that they are often their own support network. So, by adopting a family group, this allows important bonds to be maintained and strengthened even more, keeping together an existing family unit whilst growing yours. If you have always considered having a larger family or feel having read this blog, it is something you may consider, please get in touch. Help us to keep our children, our family groups together.
It sadly remains that adopting brothers and sisters is not high on most peoples’ priority list when they start the adoption process. In fact, adopting a sibling group falls in to the ‘harder to place’ bracket meaning that they often wait longer for their forever families than their single counterparts. At the end of May 2022, 49% of our children needing forever families are in sibling groups of two or higher.
Karen Barrick, Head of Service at Adoption Now, said: “So often we hear parents say adopting children with their brothers and sisters has been the most beneficial factor in their children’s adoption journey. We urge anyone beginning their adoption journey to think about the children in family groups who need a loving home and ask themselves if they can spare that extra space in their home, and their heart. There is plenty of support available – from the financial to the practical - for those that decide they can.”
If you are considering adopting siblings then we would love for you to come to an online information event, watching from the comfort of your own home. Our events are free to attend and there is no obligation or pressure to commit to adoption, as we do understand that some people may need more time to consider and research further.
Our next events are taking place on:
- Wednesday 15th June, 5pm – 6:30pm
- Wednesday 29th June, 12pm – 1:30pm
Adoption Now’s Information Events were rated as excellent in a recent mystery shopping exercise and are a great place to start your adoption journey. One recent attendee said: “The event was well thought out and planned. It had great information slides and the team presented it well. It was great to hear from an adopter guest speaker, who’s really been there too.”
Everyone is welcome to attend, wherever they are up to in their decision-making process, so if you are just starting out in your research or ready to get started, please come and join us. Those considering adopting as a single parent are welcome to attend with a family member or friend to support them.
Debbie Collings, Team Manager at Adoption Now, said: “For anybody considering adoption our Virtual Information Events are a great opportunity to meet our highly professional, experienced team who will explain the adoption process, answer any questions you may have, and most importantly provide insight into the children waiting to be adopted. There is always an adoptive speaker present, talking about their journey and offering a real sense into what adoption is really like. The events have proved highly successful with many attendees enquiring and moving towards the next stage.”
